Paddle Your Own Canoe See photos in the photo gallery!

Navigate the Chicago River by kayak or canoe with experienced instructors from Chicago River Canoe and Kayak. Before leaving our launch site in Roscoe Village, close to where the old Riverview Park once stood, we'll start with a brief orientation on paddling and safety tips. Then we'll paddle to River Park where we'll enjoy a riverside picnic on the grass. You can choose from a kayak, a tandem kayak or a canoe.

Wednesday matinee series

2012 begins with Mozart's The Magic Flute and Verdi's Aida. Then on to Jerome Kern's "Showboat" and Handel's Rinaldo.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra
Friday matinee series

Riccardo Muti conducts Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 4 and Mahler's Symphony No. 4 will be performed with Bernard Haitink conducting.

Theater Opportunities

Theater productions abound and residents are attending Stephen Sondheim's "the Follies" at Chicago Shakespeare Theater; "RENT" at Ethel Barber Theater at Northwestern University; a subscription and lunch group for the 2012 season at the Marriott Lincolnshire Theatre to include "The Pirates of Penzance"; "A Walk in the Woods," the Pulitzer-nominated Lee Blessing paly at Chicago's Timeline Theater; and this season of four plays at Writer's Theater in Glencoe to include Tom Stoppard's "The Real Thing" and Harold Pinter's "The Caretaker."

Zumba Gold
Monday and Friday afternoons

Zumba combines high energy and motivating music with unique moves and combinations that allow the participants to dance away their worries. It's based on the principle that a workout should be "fun and easy to do," allowing participants to stick to the fitness program and achieve long-term health benefits. Zumba is a feel-happy workout that is great for both the body and the mind. Movements are performed while seated on a chair.

Yoga
Tuesday and Thursday afternoons

A certified yoga instructor will lead you through this class in order to help maintain and improve your range of motion, flexibililty, strength and balance. Movements are performed on and off a chair. Experience a new approach to stress relief through mind/body connection.

Water Dynamics
Monday afternoons and Tuesday mornings

This 45-minute class is held in the large pool. Water dynamics is a great workout that includes a variety of exercises designed to use major muscle groups, increase heart rate, raise metabolism and burn calories. The focus is on balance, muscle strength and toning as we use the water's natural properties for maximum benefit.

First Monday Book Club

The popular First Monday Book Club features reviewers of a wide range of books. Recents reviews have been given by Denise Philpot about Mark Seals' "The Man in the Rockefeller Suit," and Jenny Riddle reviewed "Home: A Memoir of My Early Years" by Julie Andrews. Ms. Riddle's review included vocals.
